Understanding IGCSE Grading: What You Need to Know
The IGCSE grading system can be confusing for students and parents alike.
The 9-1 Grading System
Many IGCSE subjects now use the 9-1 grading scale (replacing the old A*-G system):
- Grade 9 — Exceptional performance (old A*)
- Grade 8 — Very high achievement (old A*)
- Grade 7 — Strong performance (old A)
- Grade 6 — Good achievement (old B)
- Grade 5 — Strong pass (old B/C)
- Grade 4 — Standard pass (old C)
- Grade 3 — Below pass threshold (old D/E)
- Grade 2 — Low achievement (old E/F)
- Grade 1 — Minimal achievement (old F/G)
How Grades Are Calculated
Coursework vs. Exams
Some subjects include coursework (typically 20-50% of final grade), while others are 100% exam-based.
Grade Thresholds
Grade boundaries vary each session depending on exam difficulty.
What Do Universities Look For?
UK Universities
Competitive courses typically require 5-7 IGCSEs at grades 7-9.
US Universities
IGCSEs are viewed positively as rigorous preparation.
